The Dignitarian Dialogues was created to encourage an international conversation on the ideas expressed in Robert W. Fuller's Somebodies and Nobodies. Fuller has identified the pervasive problem plaguing our democracy, and he's given it the apt name "rankism." More importantly, he has defined the necessary solution, which he calls the "dignitarian movement." We bought 20,000 copies of Somebodies and Nobodies to give away through Bookcrossing.com, just to get people talking about rankism and the possibility of a dignitarian society.
Here are some of the responses we've received from readers: "Fuller seems to have found that '-ism' that, once eradicated, would pretty much eliminate the rest of them." "This book is a GODSEND! I would love to see this book become mandatory reading for high school students." "Robert Fuller makes us understand that equal dignity, whatever one's place in society or the world, is a key to peace and social order." We have two goals. First, we want you to help us spread the word about Somebodies and Nobodies. And then we want your help in getting these new words, "rankism" and "dignitarian," out into the world and into dictonaries. Dictionary editors are on the alert for new words, and they notice when words begin appearing regularly in the media, in books, and in everyday speech. So, please, seize all opportunities to use "rankism" and "dignitarian" in your daily life. Include them in newsletters, petitions, letters to the editor, on placards, on the radio, on websites, in blogs, on television, or wherever the opportunity arises! Together we can build a movement so powerful it will become part of the lexicon. Please let us know if you see any examples of the words "rankism" and "dignitarian" in print or broadcast use.
